STUDENT FAQs

  • Where in the room will safes be installed?

In most cases, safes will be installed in closets and secured to the floor or wall, similar to the set-up in many hotel rooms. For the student's convenience, a pedestal might be used to accommodate varied closet sizes.

  • What happens when a student forgets their 4 digit unlock code?

The student can access CSI Safes' website and CSI Safes will provide the unlock code after the student supplies required security identification.

  • What happens if the safe malfunctions or is damaged?

Students can complete an online service request, or contact CSI Safes via phone. CSI Safes will arrange for any required repairs, maintenance, or may just replace the safe.

  • Who else has access to the student's unlock code?

CSI Safes will initially provide students with the unlock code, and then CSI Safes will encourage students to create their own code using the provided unlock code to open the safe. Once the safe is open, the code that is used to close the safe is the same code used to open the safe.

  • How do you activate the safes?

    4 Simple Steps:
    1) Student goes online and sets up an account with security information
    2) Student reviews and accepts online User Agreement
    3) Student supplies billing information and then code is provided to activate safe
    4) Student enters serial number on safe to register that safe to their account

  • How is installation of the safes handled with the university?

CSI Safes will coordinate safe installations with university facilities management. This is likely to occur over the summer, when residence halls are empty. CSI Safes will utilize approved third party contractors to install the safes. The safes feature pre-drilled holes that allow for ready installation and bolting to any structurally stable surfaces.

  • How much does CSI Safe’s service cost?

Depending on the plan chosen by the university, the safe rents anywhere from for $78 to $95 for the full academic year. In the event a student moves to another room within the University that has a safe available, the student will receive credit from the safe in the original room.

  • What is the capacity and specifications of the CSI in-room safe?

The safe is large enough to hold most laptops plus additional personal items. The safe's internal specifications are 19” wide x 15.25” deep x 7.50” wide. The fully motorized, battery operated safe features electronic operation with 2 locking bolts, a highly visible LED display, ADA-compliant keypad, electrostatic powder coat paint finish, carpeted interior to protect your valuables, and a shelf to separate the laptop from your other personal items. Four AA batteries are provided for power—which will last longer than the entire academic year.

  • What does BATT-L mean?

A BATT-L indication means that the batteries are low. This requires a change of batteries. The batteries are located on the inside of the safe on the back of the door. You will need a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw and slide plastic plate to the left. Replace the 4 dead batteries with 4 new AA alkaline batteries. Slide the black plastic cover back in place and put the screw back in. You may also check the status of the batteries by pressing the LOCK (#) button. If the display reads BATT-H, then the battery status is OK.

  • What is the guaranteed life of the safe?

Although the safe used by CSI Safes is warranted in its entirety for five years, CSI Safes’ business model relieves schools from all considerations on the useful life of the safe. CSI Safes assumes a refreshment need on the safe on or about the tenth year of consistent use. At such time, CSI Safes will replace the safe. CSI Safes retains ownership of the CSI safe on removal.

  • Describe onsite training for users?

Directions for the use of the safe are simple and historically have required no training for end-users (dorm residents). There are administrative features occasionally used by housing authority personnel that require a minimal amount of training. This training is traditionally done virtually through phone conversations and/or webinars.

  • What support services are offered to the university after the installation is complete?

CSI Safes’ business model retains ownership of the safes throughout the period of usage at participating schools. During this time CSI Safe’s assumes responsibility for the safes being at appropriate operating status. If school’s personnel experience an issue with a safe, it will be referred to CSI Safes through our 24-hour customer service call center.

  • Describe the support services that the organization offers to customers (end-users).

Prior to arriving in their dorm, schools will provide CSI Safes with the campus domain email address for each end-user. CSI Safes will email each end-user with detailed instructions on how to go online and register their safe. Throughout the entirety of the end-user’s rental of CSI’s safe, they will have access to our 24-hour customer service call center.

  • What is typical service response time?

Although CSI Safes guarantees a response within 24 hours to requests made through our 24-hour customer service call center, most issues are resolved within an hour when received between 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM ET Monday - Friday.

  • Is troubleshooting, including unlocking of safe, achievable remotely?

The safe used by CSI Safes has an extremely low failure rate. In most cases, the trouble is an end-user error such as a forgotten combination code. CSI Safes provides remote troubleshooting and a method for remotely unlocking the safe. Each safe has a number of pre-programmed one use, six digit combinations which will unlock the safe. If the end-user has forgotten their combination code, they call our 24-hour customer service call center and provide their safe’s number (easily read off of the safe). A CSI Safes’ technician will call the phone number registered to that safe and ask the caller a security question. If the caller provides information that matches what the end-user registered, the unlock combination will be provided. In the unusual instance when this is not the problem, the likely issue is a dead battery. Using the same method to reach us described above, a CSI Safes technician will walk the end-user through the process of changing the battery. It should be noted that batteries are changed every summer by CSI Safes at a time the dorm is vacant therefore instances of a dead battery are very rare.

  • How does the student pay and how does the school get paid?

CSI Safes proposes to deliver and install the safes to each location identified by participating institutions. CSI Safes will be responsible for the cost of the safe and maintains ownership of the safes throughout the agreement with the school. CSI Safe’s business model requires no capital outlay by participating schools for installation or maintenance of the safes.
